A little bit about Sara's Adoption

This picture is from the first time we met Sara.

An Adoption Prayer

Not flesh of my flesh.
Nor bone of my bone.
But still miraculously my own.
Never forget for a single minute.
You didn't grow under my heart
But in it.

Sara was our first miracle. On August 23, 2004 I received the best phone call of my life (so far) - "Laura, are you somewhere you can talk, we have a birthmother that would like to meet you and Chad...and the baby is already born...and it is a girl...and her name is Sara" - words that changed our family forever. Eight days after that phone call Sara came home.

We have an open adoption with Sara's birthparents - something we cherish - we feel blessed that they are a part of our life. They are amazing people and we look forward to each visit with them. You can never have too many people who love you in your life!

Sara has always know how she was brought into our family - adoption is just the way we became a family. We have a special box that we keep all our adoption memories in for her and we read her lots of children's books about adoption - our favourite is "Tell Me Again About the Night I was Born" by Jamie Lee Curtis. We also celebrate Sara's "Gotcha Day" every year as a family.

Sara has brought more joy into our life than we ever thought possible - we are so blessed that we are on another amazing adoption adventure that will lead us to our second miracle.

I just got your comment on my blog about timelines for referrals. When I last talked with IA they stated 6-8 months. I then tacked on about 2 months..only because our file won't arrive in ET until October...and i like to mentally prepare myself for lengthening timelines...as this always seems to happen! I'm sorry if my post gave you a scare...I should have said that the 8-10 months was what 'I' had predicted....but what I was really told was 6-8 months.

Glad to have found your blog...will be reading up on it tonight! All the best in your journey!

Hi,
You don't know me but I stumbled on your comment after randomly ending up on Craig and Jaclyn's blog. I am also in the process of adopting from through Ethiopia (I'm from Alberta). If the IA you refer to is Imagine Adoption, then I'll tell you what they told me just today: 2-4 months for an infant referral.
Cheers,
Melissa

Okay, let me be clearer, because I don't want to give you wrong info. I'm going to say 4 just to be safe (for the referral), but I had thought it was 3-6 months before I called and remember going, "That was faster than I thought". Either way, she (Erica) said about 1 year from when they get your application, home assessment, provincial approval, etc. to when you can go there for pick up.

I enjoyed reading about Sara's adoption. She is a cutie.
You were asking about how long it took our file to get the Ethiopia. Ours was very quick. I was told one week that it was being sent and the next week I heard it had arrived and we were in the "database." I was really surprised at how fast it was. Can't hurt to put in a call to your caseworker to get them to check, if you haven't done so already. Two weeks would seem like a normal amount of time to me. I don't know why ours was so quick.

I am glad to have found your blog as we moving almost parallel (with me a bit behind). You know how when you're walking on an icy sidewalk, it's nice to have someone ahead of you to show you the slippery bits? Well... that sounds bad, but I just mean that when you get a referral, I can think to myself, "Okay, mine's coming up," and when you get the okay to travel, etc. All the exciting parts that my heart aches for, I can wait patiently for a month after you get there, and then I'll be able go go, "It's almost here!" I will be following your journey! Good luck! On an aside, are you looking for infant adoption?

What a nice post! It's funny to me to think that some people look at a family created by adoption and think that it is a second best choice to creat a family. My thinking is so different, I really feel so strongly that adopting a child is such a beautiful and special thing, and if anyone told me tomorrow that I couldn't adopt I would be crushed. Reading your post reminded me of that feeling of how special it is to adopt. Your daughter is so beautiful and both both sound like amazing parents!

What a great story to share!

Hopefully we'll all get referrals sooner rather than later.
